The black-collared hawk primarily preys on fish, including small mammals and insects, and is known for hunting in shallow waters. It is an adaptable predator, often seen perched near water bodies or gliding over wetlands in search of prey. Despite some habitat threats due to wetland degradation, the species is currently classified as of Least Concern.
