Our Excursions in The Amazon
BIRDWATCHING in iquitos
Peru and the Peruvian Amazon jungle are privileged places for lovers of ornithology, birdwatching and photography. Our country is home to 20% of the world's bird population and has become the world leader with the greatest diversity of birds in the world, surpassing Colombia, reaching a record of 1,879 species. The Peruvian Amazon jungle is home to more than 1,800 species of birds. In Peru, 106 species of endemic birds are recorded, that is, they are only found here. The location of Curassow Lodge on the banks of the Yanayacu River allows the traveler to observe several of these, including the rare Piurí (Crax globlulosa), the prehistoric bird called Shansho (hoatzin), toucans, falcons, hummingbirds, parrots, macaws, jacanas and more. With your private guide you will explore the rivers and lagoons, you will walk the trails in the middle of the primary jungle to see up close the enormous wealth of birds that this remote part of the Peruvian Amazon houses. We recommend taking a tour of at least 5 days, to have the opportunity to observe as many birds as possible.

HIKING IN PRIMARY JUNGLE
Just a step away from your bungalow, the jungle awaits you! The Tamshiyacu - Tahuayo Communal Reserve, a natural paradise that awaits you with open arms, exploring its paths is one of our most popular excursions because there is a variety of exotic fauna that includes macaws, sloth, monkeys, snakes, capybaras, giant otters and more. An impressive view is offered by the imposing “Ceiba”, a tree that can reach up to 10 meters in diameter and 30 meters high. This Communal Reserve located in the heart of the Peruvian jungle is a testimony of the beauty and importance of preserving our natural ecosystems. With every step you take, you will be walking on land that is home to an incomparable wealth of flora and fauna, many of which are unique species. Every corner tells a fascinating story of coexistence and adaptation. As we explore, we encourage you to open your senses to the melodious sounds of exotic birds, absorb the vibrant colors of flowers, and feel the fresh humidity of the air that envelops the jungle. Additionally, you will be walking along trails that have been carefully preserved to minimize our impact on this fragile ecosystem.

Around Curassow there are 2 riverside communities, Ayacucho of Tiphisca and San Juan of Yanayacu, where you can witness their way of life and customs. We suggest travelers visit any of these communities and when possible, purchase some products such as bracelets, necklaces, woven bags and other handmade crafts to support the local economy. Visiting these villages will also allow the traveler to learn about the social activities that Curassow Amazon Lodge are doing for the development of the communities (economic, educational and infrastructure support). lisa2025-03-21Verified Great stay in the Amazon! We had an excellent stay at Currasow. Transfer to and from Iquitos was seamless. The lodge was vere comfortable and the food was great. We loved having a guide devoted to us and our interests. Alex was knowledgeable and very responsibe to tailoring our experience. We saw sloths, monkeys, dolphins and dozens of fantastic birds. Highly recommend this locally owned and operated Amazon experience! Jayci T2025-02-26Verified A great amazon adventure with a small business family feel I highly reccomend Curassow lodge for your amazon adventure. They stand out as a small business that puts their guests first and goes out of their way to give them a personalized experience and make each guest feel like part of their family. My boyfriend and I stayed here for 5 days with our tour guide Flavio and absolutely loved it. I was a bit afraid to go into the amazon jungle hours away from any towns or hospitals at first, but Flavio made us feel very safe as he grew up in the amazon jungle and has worked as a tour guide for many years. He knows the jungle very well and had experience leading survival trips there as well. He is very knowledgeable about the amazonian cultures, traditions, and medicinal practices. He also knows how to spot animals high up in the treetops and we had the chance to see many birds, monkeys, insects, and various other animals in their natural habitat with him. Flavio is also a great guide and he made us feel very welcomed to the jungle. He told us many stories during our meals about his life in the jungle and local legends and customs. He went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience and even picked us up from the airport at 5:30 am and took us on a tour of Belen market while we waited to go to the lodge. Curassow is a smaller lodge with a family feel. We were the only guests during our visit but Flavio told us the maximum capacity is 15 guests and each group always has their own private tour guide. There is a schedule of activities each day including swimming in the Amazon, piraña fishing, nature walks and boat tours. But the tour guides are open to changing the schedule based on your needs, if you need more time to rest or want to do a specific activity again, they are happy to accomodate. Their cook Ricardo made us delicious meals every day and made delicious vegetarian meals for me. Their bartender Julio also made us different juices for each meal using different fruits from the jungle. He also makes great pisco sours with different fruits from the jungle. The rooms were very beautiful and clean. The room service was great, they cleaned each day and made sure we had everything we needed. They were well equiped for the jungle environment and had a good fan for ventilation, mosquito nets on all the windows, and a mosquito net over the bed. This was the only place in the jungle we did not get mosquito bites. They even made a beautiful display of flowers and balloons for us because we celebrated out 1 year anniversary here. We had a wonderful experience here and I will definitely return to Curassow lodge when we visit Iquitos again. A helpful tip is to bring clothing mosquitos cannot bite through. There are more mosquitos than you can possibly imagine in the jungle. James S2025-02-16Verified An incredible and unique experience! Highly recommend the Curassow Amazon Lodge and their private tour. We did the 5D/4N tour and we were so pleased, happy and thankful for our time there! It was above and beyond of our expectations! In our 4 Night and 5 Day tour: - We saw so many different types of animals in their natural habitat, including monkeys, sloths, insects, fish, birds, caiman and even pink dolphins! Swimming in the amazon river around sunset watching the dolphins was definitely a highlight. - The staff went above and beyond to take care of us making sure we were fed, comfortable and enjoying our time. Foods and drinks were fresh & delicious! - All of the transportation (cars & boats) were well coordinated where we didn’t feel like we were waiting around or in any danger. Martin even met as at the airport to say goodbye and gave us a t-shirt. - Jungle walks both night and day. On our full day, we even had lunch cooked over a fire in the jungle. - Our guides were exceptional. They had great English and were happy to answer any questions and amazing at spotting the animals. - The lodge was fit for purpose and had a great place to chill out in the evening and even had Starlink. Ben the lodge cat was great company. - We visited the nearby village and met some of the local people. Make sure you bring enough stationary for both schools (there is an intermediate and a primary!). We really enjoyed the flexibility of the tour where we could decide what we felt like doing on the day. Overall, it was really good value and one of the best experiences we did over a 6-month trip around Central/South America. Special shoutout to: Ricardo, our private tour guide who was great communicator with great English and Jeremy who was always first to spot the animals! Both made our trip very special so thank you! Also big thanks to Martin for all the organisation and Ricky for cooking us delicious food every day. Just a few things that might help people: - A good flashlight and your own binoculars will make your experience a lot more enjoyable. - Breathable sun protection clothes. We were there early December, and every day was hot and sunny. You spend a lot of time on a boat with no shelter. - A good camera always helps. - A few varieties of insect repellent. This does make you feel a lot hotter but there are a lot of insects. - We weren’t sure on whether to take malaria pills or not given the conflicting information online. We decided to buy some in Lima and take them just in case. They were quite strong and made me feel a bit off on the day I took them. Malc2025-01-13Verified An unforgettable experience We spent three nights here and had an incredible experience under our personal guide, Flavio, who was with us from airport pick up to drop off. From early morning boat tours to night time tarantula treks, his ability to pick out wildlife in the forest was jaw dropping. He was ably assisted by Ivan who guided our boat. We swam in the Amazon, caught piranhas and saw sloths, many species of monkey, caimans and snakes, plus many birds, bats and insects. The lodge was tranquil and clean with excellent food and drink from Julio and Riccardo. The perfect stay in a unique setting. B M2025-01-07Verified Better than the competition ten folds. All the lodges are similar Humble cabins Solar electricity Filtered bath water from the river What is great about this lodge is that you get a personal guide and a dedicated boat. The competition (muyuna) has a groups and groups of people on boats for expeditions. This is why we chose this lodge. The bonus: the place is impeccably clean, the food is great the juices are fresh and the workers are attentive and helpful. I’m glad I chose it. Anna-Lena L2025-01-03Verified Unique Experience We had such a unique experience. We stayed 4 days and 3 nights and this was perfect. The staff is so nice and friendly, you get the greatest food and fresh juice everyday. Flavio our tour guide was the best. He has so much knowledge about the rainforest, you can ask him everything. He speaks English very well. Thanks to him we saw so many animals and had unique experiences for example a night boat tour or swimming in the amazon. It is a very private experience, this gives you the opportunity to really get to feel the rainforest. The accomodation is very nice, directly at the river. You can watch birds and caymans right from your hammock on the balcony. We would definetely recommend the lodge. Abbas A2024-12-11Verified Amazing, but with noted areas for improvement There are myriad positive things to say about Curassow that other reviews cover, which I will summarize below: > Location boasted exceptional biodiversity > Private guides with great knowledge of both local flora and fauna but also the culture of the indigenous population > A large social , communal area where we met other like-minded travellers > Friendly and polite staff > Animals are observed in their natural habitat which is a more ethical and non-intrusive method of interacting with the wildlife than observing it in cages > We understand profits benefit local communities I did think our stay could have been improved with some adjustments: > The option for a group vs a private tour. We enjoy the former as means of socializing with others, and think it can also lead to more learning when different individuals in the group ask unique questions. I also thunk it could be a good way of rewarding tour guides with more tips for less effort. We didn’t also realize Curassow only did private tours but perhaps we missed this detail when booking. > The shower water smelt swampy, and think the complaint was consistently voiced by others we met. I understand access to clean water may be limited in so remote a location, but I’d encourage this to be looked into and improved on. > Vegetarian meals lacked diversity. I hope my feedback is taken constructively and not critically to improve the experience for future tourists. Skip F2024-12-08Verified Unforgettable experience with the Curassow lodge! We stayed in the Curassow lodge voor 4d3n and we had the best experience of our trip! It was very special to get into contact with the Amazone and see so many animals. Furthermore the staff was really kind, helpful and skilled. The staff made us really feel at home. They even had a special surprise for our 3 year anniversary! At last, they made a perfect planning for us with different activity’s, which they adjusted to our wishes and preferences. We would really recommend to stay here! albertas g2024-12-06Verified Just awesome We stayed in this lodge for 4 days/3 nights. And I need to say that almost everything was perfect.Especially tours to the jungle and Amazon river. Our guide Antonio was real jungle expert, very friendly and nature lover. He showed us a lot of wild animals, birds, fish, frogs, tarantulas ,spiders, different kinds of jungle trees, giant water lilies. Bungalows were pretty good too.We had electricity, wifi all the time. There wasn’t AC but fan helped us very much. They even gave us T-shirts with lodge logo as a gift. Gracias Antonio Adios pramit m2024-12-01Verified A True Flavor of the Amazon! The Curassow team is extremely friendly and hospitable. Martin the owner was easy to work with and the team took into consideration all that we wanted to see and do during our trip. Our guide, Flavio, knew the surrounding areas really well as he grew up and lives relatively close to the area. Communicating with him was a breeze as his English was fantastic. We had opted for the 2 days and 1 night package as we didn’t have a long stay in Peru but wish we could have stayed for longer as our itinerary was packed. We fished piranhas, went on adventures into the jungle and so much more. The food was extremely fresh and delicious and we were able to try some unique flavors. Definitely get a pisco sour and a maracuya sour at the bar in the evening as the drinks were incredible!
