The night monkey or musmuqui (Aotus nancymae) is a small, nocturnal primate found in the Amazon rainforest of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Known for their large eyes, which help them see in the dark, they are arboreal and live in small family groups. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates.
Night monkeys are social and often seen traveling in pairs or family groups. They are classified as Near Threatened due to habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are needed to protect their forest habitat and reduce human impact.
This specie of primate is commonly seen around our Eco Lodge while we go for hikes o the tree gaps.
Ecological Role
Night monkeys also consume insects, playing a role in controlling insect populations in their habitat. This helps maintain a balanced ecosystem by preventing overpopulation of certain insect species.
