A JOURNEY AROUND THE CULTURE OF THIS AMAZON CITY
It went from being a small jungle village of a few families to being one of the richest cities of America in a few years due to the wealth brought by the export of rubber. This left a legacy of European-style buildings of which 89 survive.
Iquitos, a city located on the left bank of the Amazon River, is the largest city in the world that does not have a land connection to other cities. Its privileged location allows it to be the gateway to the Amazon jungle and its biodiversity. Let's see the main attractions that Iquitos and the Amazon River have to offer:
- Plaza de Armas: It is the heart of the Monumental Zone (historic center) of Iquitos. It is surrounded by beautiful republican buildings from the Rubber Era (1864 – 1914).
- Malecón Tarapacá: Located initially on the banks of the Amazon River, it is ideal for walking and enjoying beautiful views of the Itaya River. Two museums and several historical buildings are located along the Malecon.
- Historic houses. The Rubber Era left several buildings in a cosmopolitan Iquitos, with people from all over the world. During this historical period, beautiful buildings with Portuguese tiles were built. La Casa de Fierro: An iconic building of iron architecture designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same engineer behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
- Belén Market: A local market where you can experience daily life and the diversity of products from the Amazon.
- Amazonian Museum: Located on the Malecón Tarapacá, it offers information about the history of Iquitos. Among its permanent exhibitions it has statues of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon.
- Amazon Library: It is the largest Amazon-themed library in Peru and the second in the world. It has more than 25,000 books with the history of the Amazon since the arrival of the first Europeans.
- Museum of Amazonian Indigenous Cultures: Presents permanent exhibitions on the native peoples of the South American Amazon such as Brazil, Peru and Venezuela, among others.
- Ayapúa Historic Boat Museum: Shows the interior of a historical boat from the Rubber boom period, as well as tools that were used in that era.
- Iquitos Museum: Presents temporary and permanent exhibitions on the history of Iquitos.
These are just some of the tourist attractions that the city of Iquitos offers. The Amazon region is known for its unique biodiversity, so exploring the jungle and participating in ecotourism activities are also popular experiences in this part of Peru.
