Full Day: Iquitos and the Amazon

This tour includes a visit to the main attractions located north Iquitos. You will navigate through the Amazon River one of the greatest natural wonders of the world, as well as its main tributaries near Iquitos the Itaya and Nanay Rivers. This excursion is ideal for people who have little time or do not wish to sleep outside Iquitos. You can observe and interact with some of the species of flora and fauna best known of the Amazon rainforest: monkeys, turtles, caimans, piranhas and a jaguar. We visit only formal places that take care and heal the captive wild animals.

Itinerary

8.00 Pick up from your hotel or place required.

8.30 Navigation the Itaya and Nanay rivers, which are tributaries of the Amazon River to reach Pilpintuwasi, where you can see different species of animals like monkeys, one ocelot and jaguar and other animals that have been rescued by the authorities and now are in the recovering process.
Optional: Visit the Boras and/or Yaguas tribes of the Momón river, they are tourist tribes that will perform their traditional dances and show their handicrafts for travelers (Additional payment: S/.25 Soles; Entrance fee: S/.20 Soles per person per tribe).

10.30 Navigation along the Amazon River, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. During this boat trip you can appreciate the greatness of the longest river in the world and, river islands and various river villages (also, riverine villages. Spanish: pueblos ribereños). Stop at Independencia, a river village where we will climb to the viewpoint tower to observe a beautiful view of the river and surrounding Amazonian landscape from 30 meters (100 ft) high. We can walk 15 min towards the lupuna or ceiba (Ceiba insignis), one of the most important trees in the Amazon. Also, villagers will be glad to show their handicrafts.

11.45 Navigating the Amazon river, we will reach another riverine village called Barrio Florido where you will visit the Fundo Pedrito, a farm where you can see and feed spectacled caimans (Caiman crocodilus), the giant Amazon fish or locally known as paiche (Arapaima gigas), and hungry red-bellied piranhas (Pygocentrus nattereri). We also show the world’s largest water lily, Victoria Regia.

13.30 Boat ride to the meeting of the waters of the Nanay River and Amazon River, to observe the confluence of the black waters of Nanay River with brown waters of the Amazon river. In this confluence is possible, with some luck watch the pink and grey dolphins (Inia geoffrensis and Sotalia fluviatilis).

14.00 Return to Iquitos.
